Photo Damage and Ageing
What is photo Damage (Extrinsic Ageing)
Excess sun exposure is a big contributor to the majority of cosmetic skin conditions and it is the main cause of premature ageing of the skin. Photo ageing describes skin ageing from external influences, with excess sun exposure being the main influence. Ageing of the skin is preventable with sun protection and the daily use of SPF 30+ or above.
Internal (Intrinsic Ageing)
Most factors of ageing are due to external (extrinsic) influences such as UVR, climate, wind, but there are some changes which happen just by the passing of time, or simply getting older. These changes happen due to internal influences in the body and affect the skin deep below its surface.
These sorts of changes will cause for example, a thinning of the upper layer of the skin because we just don't make enough skin cells any more as we age, water content reduces, the rate of cellular division reduces, weaker skin immunity less skin elasticity, turgidity and plump.
There are also changes that occur way down deep in our fatty tissues, where areas of fat decline and increase in certain areas like the forehead, cheeks, and around the lip area, lower and upper eye lids, jowls and jaw line.
Hormones influence skin health, with estrogen and progesterone maintaining skin moisture, strength and elasticity. At menopause there is a decline in fremale hormaones, resulting in changes to the skin, particularly in the peri oral area (around the upper and lower lips, and around the mouth area generally).
